ACADEMIC
CONCEPT PAPER
“Focusing
on establishment of library to lower dropout rates in SEE”
Introduction
Libraries can help a lot
of students in their academic studies for all groups but mainly for the SLC or
now known as SEE appearing students. SEE is a secondary level examination with
a high value. Getting good grades in the SEE examination can sure give rise to
many opportunities to the students. In my knowledge in our village Golanjor
Ward no 8, there are rarely any libraries. The government school is the only
educational institution there, and the school doesn’t even have a library. They
lack financial support and are hardly able to run themselves properly. Students
appearing in SEE level examination don’t have much references for their study
which explains the poor performance of the students in my village. With a
proper library with even few reference books can help the students improve
their grades. The dropout rates in SEE is also increasing in my village as
student think they can’t do much in the examination and just quit. Library can
help reduce the dropout rates.
Need of this Study
It is estimated that more
than 100 students dropout during SEE every year in my village due to poor
education. Most of them are from low-income family with poor lifestyle. Many
students cannot even afford books or have time for reading in the village. With
the establishment of the libraries in my village, the people from poor family
will be able to get access to the books and other materials required for their
SEE examination and thus reducing their mentality of dropping out.
Background
Several surveys conducted
in the village has shown that 80% of the reason for the dropout of students in
SEE level is due to low income. With this in mind Leo Club (2013) distributed
text books and copies for the SEE appearing students with great success.
However students still said how they lacked other materials for study and most
of the students also had to go work in the fields which gave them less time to
focus on studies. Therefore to eradicate the problem even further Red Cross
Nepal (2015) launched a campaign around the village focusing on the importance
of education for children as well as the value of SEE certificate. The campaign
was named “सबै साक्षर बनौ”.
With many succeeding
campaigns and distribution programs still the dropout rates haven’t dropped
much. They are all lacking the environment for them to study properly which
very much library can provide. The government school was also established for
the new leap in educational sector in the village.
Objectives
The research
paper seeks to
achieve its general
objective of lowering the dropout rates of SEE appearing
students by focusing on the following specific objectives:
- · To determine the effectiveness of the role
of educated students in the development of the village sector.
- · To help students achieve their dreams of
higher education by providing quality lower educations.
- · To make parents more supportive of
education for their children.
- · To create a clean and silent environment
for the students to learn, discuss, share their opinions and ideas as well as
problems.
- · To create an educational community.
Research Questions
- · Does having a good and silent environment
with all the necessary study materials motivate students to study?
- · What are the views of parents and guardians
regarding this matter?
- · Do parents not question the decision of
the SEE drop outs in the village?
- · Do students in village sectors not get
enough opportunities in the educational fields?
Methodology
The study
intends to use
cross sectional survey
design in determining
the impact of the establishment of library on the quality of education
the students get.
The study will sample 5
local wards and 3 VDC’s in Ghurmi, Sindhuli out of a population of 1 thousand
which are mainly in village area settings excluding the headquarters areas. The
study will collect both primary and secondary data, and the quantitative data
generated will be analyzed using descriptive statistics which will include
percentage distribution, mean and the frequency counts. The qualitative data
from the study will undergo transcription and reported in themes and sub-themes.
The relationship between the independent and dependent variables will be
explained through multiple regression. Thus giving us an exact value from the
data with graphs and tables.
